Agreement To Add California As A Free State

As there was de facto recognition, Mexico treated the Nueces River as its control of the northern borders. Between the two rivers was a vast area, largely uninhabited. Neither Mexico nor the Republic of Texas had the military strength to assert their territorial claim. On December 29, 1845, the Republic of Texas became part of the United States and became the 28th state. Texas was committed to slavery, and its constitution made it illegal for the legislature to free slaves. The adoption of the 1850 compromise, as we have learned, sparked celebrations in Washington and elsewhere, with the crowd shouting, “The Union is saved!” Fillmore himself described the compromise of 1850 as a “final settlement” of section issues, although the future of slavery in New Mexico and Utah is unclear.
